The Aha! Moment:
In late 2013 Dave Tennant, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran was cooking eggs for his wife who was pregnant with their first child. He cracked the eggs on the side of the pan, which was his typical egg-cracking method, and made a huge mess! Half of the egg fell into the pan and the other half ran outside the pan and onto the stove. Frustrated, Dave thought "there has to be a better way!"
After he finished cooking the breakfast he went straight into "Marine Clean" mode. But Dave despises cleaning from his time in the service. This fueled him even more- "there has to be a better way!"
While cleaning the pan he noticed the egg drippings on the outside of the pan were being cooked which rubbed off the outside finish and was ruining the pans. Even more frustrated he thought again "there has to be a better way!"
So from that day he started brainstorming different ideas. One afternoon he looked at the spoon rest on the counter top next to the stove and the idea hit him like a ton of bricks - convert the spoon rest into a dual-function egg cracker! This will crack eggs, contain messes, but most importantly - IT WILL PREVENT HIM FROM CLEANING! Additionally, he could just replace his current spoon rest with the Crack'em to get the dual-functioning product and prevent him from adding another device to the counter top! BOOM - the Crack'em was born!
Designing the Crack’em:
Dave spent over a year developing different designs and identified 4 critical design criteria for the Crack’em:
1. Ergonomically Simple - It needed to be something that would facilitate cracking eggs, not make it more difficult, and EASY TO CLEAN!
2. Aesthetically Designed - I wanted the design to be something people would like to display in their kitchen, even when it isn’t in use.
3. Functionality - It needed to provide perfect functionality every time it was used.
4. Durability - I wanted it to be one single and solid product so that cleaning would be a breeze.
After over a year of testing different materials and designs, he finalized the Crack’em.
